Foodborne illnesses may happen more regularly than you think. According to the CDC, 1 in 6 Americans will get sick by eating contaminated foods or beverages. There are many different pathogens, chemicals, and other substances that can contaminate food, so there are many different types of foodborne illnesses.
There are two major foodborne illness groups:
- Known food pathogens: There are 31 pathogens known to cause foodborne illness. Many of these are tracked by health departments to track outbreaks and diseases.
- Unspecified agents: These are agents, chemicals, microbes, and other substances that have not been proven to cause foodborne illness or are not yet identified.
