Carson City Emergency Management will host a planning and community hazard mitigation workshop on Friday, May 7 beginning 1:30 p.m. at the Carson City Sheriff’s Office Ormsby Room, 911 E. Musser St. The workshop will feature subject matter experts and presentations addressing several of the key hazards identified.
The public is encouraged to attend or watch the public workshop online at carson.org/hazardplan. The event runs between 1:30-4:30 p.m. Masks will be required. Citizens will have additional opportunities to provide feedback to the planning team, a community survey will be available May 7 at carson.org/hazardplan.
In order to frequently assess and address the changing threat of local hazards, the Hazard Mitigation Plan is required to periodically undergo refinement. A planning group, comprised of city and state agencies, private organizations, and other agencies, including utilities, will identify a list of potential hazards that could occur within the Carson City area. Some of the hazards include flooding, severe weather, earthquakes, epidemics, and wildfire.
While an important aspect of emergency management deals with disaster recovery (the actions that a community takes to repair damages), an equally important aspect of emergency management involves hazard mitigation — sustained actions taken to reduce long-term risk to life and property. The plan identifies risks and vulnerabilities to establish mitigation strategies. The process for implementing this planning activity includes participation of agencies, stakeholders, and the public. Maintaining and updating the plan is essential to securing support from FEMA and other agencies to improve the community’s resilience through pre-disaster mitigation actions.
