Pharmacies and Retail Locations

Tests can be purchased online or in pharmacies and retail stores and private health insurance may reimburse the cost of the tests. Learn more about insurance coverage for at-home tests. Visit the FDA website for a list of authorized COVID-19 tests.

Each test is different, be sure to read the manufacturer’s instructions for use before using the test.

• Wash you hands with soap and water before and after preforming the test
• Check the expiration date. Do not use a kit past the expiration date or test components that have been damaged or are discolored based on the information provided by the manufacturer.
• Collect your nasal specimen with the swab provided. Self-test swabs do not go deeper into your nasal cavity, those swabs are used by health care providers only.

If your test is POSITIVE:

• The test detected the virus and you have a current infection
• Stay home for at least 5 days and isolate from others in your home.
• If you have no symptoms, or your symptoms are resolving, you can leave your house after 5 days, BUT wear a mask around others for 5 more days.
• If you have questions or concerns, discuss your test result with your health care provider.

You do not need to report your positive result to Carson City Health and Human Services. Self-testing results will not be included in official COVID-19 case counts.

If your test is NEGATIVE

A negative test means you were not infected with the virus that causes COVID-19 at the time of the test. It does not mean that you can not become infected at a later time. You can test negative for several reasons, including:

• You are not currently infected with the virus that causes COVID-19. If you took the test while you had symptoms and followed instructions carefully, a negative result means your current illness is probably not COVID-19.
• You took the test too early in your infection, and not enough virus was present for the test to detect it.
• The test was not performed according to instructions.

If your test was negative and if you have symptoms and/or fever, you still should stay home until symptoms are better and until at least 24 hours have passed with no fever, without the use of fever-reducing medication.
